In this Machine learning tutorial series, we will learn about the concepts and types of machine learning, with the basic introduction to the relevant terminology.

And we will also lay the groundwork for using machine learning techniques for practical problem-solving. We all know that machine learning has become one of the most exciting technologies and in fact one of the popular applications of Artificial Intelligence. There are many Huge companies that invest a lot in machine learning research, Like AmazonGoogleFacebookAppleIBM, etc.

What is Machine Learning?

Machine learning is a field of science that enables computers to learn without explicit programming. It is similar to how we humans learn things like “How to distinguish each animal” Like when we where small our parents use to tell us “This is a Dog” or “That is a cat”.

Similarly, Computers are trained by giving data like different pictures of the same object/things to make it learn what is it. Thereby, machine learning offers a more efficient option for capturing the information from data to progressively enhance the execution of predictive models and create data-driven decisions.

“Garbage in, garbage out” is especially true in ML. “You can have machine learning without sophisticated algorithms, but not without good data.” (Huffington Post)

According to Wikipedia:

Machine learning (ML) is the scientific study of algorithms and statistical models that computer systems use to progressively improve their performance on a specific task.

Machine learning algorithms build a mathematical model of sample data, known as “training data”, in order to make predictions or decisions without being explicitly programmed to perform the task.”

Applications of Machine Learning

There are enormous applications of machine learning. Its algorithms are used in the applications of Virtual Personal Assistants, Videos Surveillance,  Email Spam and Malware FilteringSocial Media Services, Detection of network intruders and computer vision.

I have written 15 Exciting Applications of Machine Learning that you can read to learn more about it.

Types of Machine Learning

There are three types of machine learning:

  • Supervised learning,
  • Unsupervised learning, and
  • Reinforcement learning.
